discus tank setup for shy fish

Post by loverd »

Got a new group of Discus last week, but they're hiding all the time. Tank's a 75 gallon, sand substrate, driftwood, and some Java ferns. Water's at 84°F, pH 6.8, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Got a Fluval 407 canister and a sponge filter. Any tips to make 'em chill out?

Sounds like your setup's solid, but they might need more cover. Try adding taller plants like Amazon swords or floating plants to block light. Also, keep the room dim for a few days. Mine took about two weeks to stop being sketchy.

Yep, floating plants worked for me too. I used frogbit and they started coming out more after a week.

Mine were the same way until I added dither fish. Got some cardinal tetras and they helped a ton. Now the Discus are out all the time. Just make sure the tetras are healthy so they don't freak 'em out more.

How often are you doing water changes? I found that smaller, daily changes (10-15%) helped mine settle faster. Big changes can stress 'em out, especially if the new water's not matched perfectly.

This is key. Also, try feeding at the same spot every time. They'll associate that area with food and start hanging out there.

Mine hid for a month. Just waited it out. Now they're fine.

Maybe the flow's too strong? My Discus hated high flow. I turned down the filter and they came out more.

Honestly, some Discus are just drama queens. Give 'em time, keep the water pristine, and they'll get over it. Or they won't. Fish, right?

Try adding some almond leaves. The tannins seem to calm 'em down, plus it makes the tank look more natural. Just don't go overboard or the water'll look like tea.
