discus tankmates for 55 gallons

Post by LunaSky »

I'm setting up a 55-gallon tank for my Discus and need advice on tankmates. They're about 4 inches, and I've got a sand substrate, planted with Java Fern and Anubias. Water's at 84°F, pH 6.8, with a canister filter. What fish can handle these conditions without stressing them out?

Cardinal Tetras are a solid choice. They thrive in the same warm, soft water as Discus and add color without competing for space. I've kept 20 in my 55 with no issues, just make sure they're well-fed to avoid nipping. Also, consider Corydoras Sterbai for the bottom, they're hardy and won't mess with your plants.

Yep, Sterbai are my go-to. They're chill and handle the heat better than other Corys. Just avoid larger fish like Angelfish, they can get territorial and sketch out the Discus.

Rummy Nose Tetras are another option. They school tight and look dope against the green plants. Mine share a 55 with Discus, zero drama. Just keep up with weekly 30% water changes, they're picky about clean water.

I'd skip the bigger stuff like Rams, they can be hit or miss. Stick to small, peaceful fish that won't steal the spotlight. Maybe some Cherry Shrimp if your Discus aren't too curious, but mine ate 'em all, lol.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll start with a group of Cardinals and Sterbai. How many of each would you recommend for a 55 with 6 Discus?

I'd do 15 Cardinals and 6 Sterbai. That keeps the bioload manageable and gives them room to school. Just watch the feeding, Discus are slow eaters, so scatter the food to avoid competition.

Agreed on the numbers. And if you wanna add more later, Rummy Noses are a safe bet. Just quarantine everything first, Discus are fragile when it comes to new tankmates bringing in nasties.
