I've been gone for a bit and accidentally posted this in the wrong section:

To get to the point, I'm wondering if it's alright to temporarily put my underweight acei in a medium to soft water tank with some tankmates while it regains its weight, rather than isolating it in a hospital tank.
The tank in question is currently home to tetras, barbs, cherry shrimp, and a bristlenose. I want to emphasize this wouldn't be a permanent arrangement – once the acei is back to a healthy weight, it'll return to its usual home in the hard water cichlid tank.

Re: recovering from illness
No replies, but plenty of views - I took that as a good sign. I've been gradually introducing the little acei to the new water, and finally released him into the tank yesterday afternoon. By evening, he'd settled in, and this morning he was eager to eat and say hello.
I think he's still getting used to the new surroundings - the tank's heavily planted, so it's a big change from what he's used to. Still, he looks healthy enough for now. I'm being careful with feeding, making sure to only use cichlid-friendly foods when he's around. Luckily, he's not stressed by the net, so I can scoop him up when I feed the others meaty foods midweek. I'll keep a close eye on him and update as needed.

I didn't chime in initially as I wasn't sure about the compatibility, but your plan seemed reasonable to me. It's great to hear the little acei is settling in and appears to be doing alright. Hopefully, it'll continue to thrive and regain its weight.

She's still smiling, and I'm pretty sure she's putting on a bit of weight now. The softer water fish are all doing well, no chasing or fighting to report, and the cherry shrimp are still intact - no casualties at the hands of the Mbuna.
I whipped up some antibiotic pellets using algae flakes, vitamin supplement liquid, and a bit of leftover amoxycillin. Just enough to give them a white fleck, then mixed and rolled them into small pellets, drying them out in the open air. She seems perkier after eating these for the past week.
No behavioral or medical issues so far from being in softer water, but that doesn't rule out internal damage, of course. Fingers crossed, Mrs fishy is on the mend.
Her mate keeps checking in on her from the Mbuna tank, looking over at her in the Amazon tank - true love, right?

That's fantastic news that she's on the mend, and the part about her mate keeping an eye on her is just too sweet.
