What's the easiest plant you've grown?
I've been keeping freshwater tanks for years, but I'm always looking for low-maintenance plants. What's the easiest plant you've grown in your setup? I'm curious about species that thrive without CO2 or high light.
Re: What's the easiest plant you've grown?
Java Fern is a no-brainer. I've got it in my 20-gallon with basic LED lighting, no CO2, and it's thriving. Just attach it to driftwood or rocks, and it'll do its thing. Even my cichlids don't mess with it.
Re: What's the easiest plant you've grown?
Anubias is another great option. I've had mine in a 10-gallon with low light for over a year, and it's barely needed any attention. Just make sure the rhizome isn't buried, or it'll rot.
Re: What's the easiest plant you've grown?
Yep, Java Fern and Anubias are solid picks. But if you wanna mix it up, try Hornwort. That stuff grows like crazy, even in sketchy conditions. Just toss it in and let it chill.
Re: What's the easiest plant you've grown?
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give Java Fern and Anubias a shot. Any tips on substrate or water parameters for these?
Re: What's the easiest plant you've grown?
Honestly, they're not picky. I've got mine in sand with basic tap water, pH around 7.0, and they're fine. Just avoid burying the rhizome, like NeoOn mentioned.
Re: What's the easiest plant you've grown?
I'd add that Java Fern can melt a bit when first introduced, but don't panic. It usually bounces back. Mine took about a month to settle in before it started putting out new leaves.

If you're lazy like me, float some Water Sprite. No planting needed, and it grows fast enough to shade the tank. Plus, my betta loves hiding in it.

For a slower-growing option, consider Cryptocoryne Wendtii. It's hardy once established, though it might melt initially if you move it. Mine took a few weeks to adjust but now looks great.
