Filter stops at 3 AM nightly

Post by VoyagerX »

My canister filter keeps shutting off at 3 AM like clockwork. It's a Fluval 407, about 6 months old. Tank is a 75g with 12 discus, 6 corydoras, and a bunch of plants. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Anyone else dealt with this?

That's a weird vibe. Have you checked the power source? My old Eheim did something similar when the outlet was faulty. Also, is the filter making any unusual noises before it stops? Could be a motor issue.

I'd suspect the impeller first. Gunk builds up and can cause it to stall. Take it apart and clean it thoroughly. Also, check the intake tube for blockages.

Yep, had this happen with my FX6. Turns out the timer on my smart plug was glitching. If you're using one, try bypassing it for a night. Otherwise, gonna echo vimster on the impeller.

Sketchy af. My dude, check if the filter's overheating. My old one would cut out when it got too hot. Also, what's your room temp at night? Might be a factor.

I agree with checking the impeller. A thorough cleaning might resolve the issue. Also, ensure the filter is not placed on an uneven surface, as this can cause operational problems.

This happened to me once. The power cord had a short in it. Try wiggling the cord near the filter when it's running to see if it cuts out. If it does, you might need a new cord.

Weird. My Fluval 306 did this when the motor was dying. If cleaning doesn't help, might be time to warranty it. How's the flow rate when it's running?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try cleaning the impeller first and see if that helps. Flow rate seems normal when it's running, no weird noises.

Cool, let us know how it goes. If it's still acting up, could be worth testing with a different power strip or outlet.
