can i keep goniopora with sps?
can i keep goniopora with sps?
I've got a mixed reef tank with some SPS and was thinking of adding a Goniopora. Heard they can be tricky, but will they mess with my Acros and Montis? Tank's a 75g, running dual AI Primes, params stable at 8.2 dKH, 420 Ca, 1350 Mg.
Re: can i keep goniopora with sps?
Gonis are chill but they pack a punch with those sweeper tentacles. If your SPS are already settled, it's sketchy. My Acro got stung bad when I tried it in my 60g. Maybe keep 'em on opposite sides if you're gonna risk it.
Re: can i keep goniopora with sps?
Goniopora need low flow and dirtier water than SPS. If you're running ULNS, they'll struggle. Mine thrived after I bumped nitrates to 5 ppm and fed Reef Roids twice a week. But yeah, watch for aggression.
Re: can i keep goniopora with sps?
Yep, same happened to my Stylo. Gonis ain't playin'.
Re: can i keep goniopora with sps?
I've kept them together for a year in my 120g with no issues. Key was spacing and moderate flow. Gonis on the sand, SPS up high. But my tank's overfiltered with a Reef Octopus 150.
Re: can i keep goniopora with sps?
Goniopora species matter. Alveopora's safer, shorter sweepers. True Gonis? Nope. My tank's 40g, tried a red one, lost two Acro frags in a week. Now it's solo in a nano.
Re: can i keep goniopora with sps?
Thanks for the heads-up, everyone. Gonna skip the Gonis for now and maybe try a Cyphastrea instead. Less drama.
Re: can i keep goniopora with sps?
Cyphastrea's a solid pick. Just give it shade if your lights are strong. Mine colored up best under the overhang of a rock, PAR around 150.
