HOW TO FRAG ZOANTHIDS

Post by kangaview »

I've got a colony of Zoanthids that's outgrown its space. What's the best way to frag them without stressing them too much? I've got a 40-gallon tank, AI Prime lighting, and stable params at 1.025 salinity, 78°F, 0 nitrates.

Fragging Zoanthids is pretty straightforward if you're careful. Use a sharp blade or bone cutters, and make sure to cut between the polyps. I've had success with a quick dip in iodine after fragging to prevent infection. What's your current flow like? High flow can help them recover faster.

Yep, high flow is key. I also recommend fragging in the evening when they're less likely to be stressed. And don't forget to wear gloves—those palytoxins are no joke.

I've never fragged Zoanthids before. Is it gonna hurt them? My tank's only 20 gallons, and I'm scared I'll mess it up. I've got a basic LED light and a HOB filter.

It's normal to be nervous, but Zoanthids are pretty resilient. Just take it slow and make clean cuts. I've fragged mine multiple times, and they always bounce back. What's your lighting schedule? Too much light right after fragging can stress them.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll try fragging tonight with bone cutters and keep the flow high. I'll report back on how it goes.

Good luck! Just remember to keep an eye on them for the first few days. If they don't open up, check your water params again. Sometimes fragging can cause a slight spike in nitrates.

Exactly. And don't freak out if they take a day or two to open. They're just being dramatic.

Alright, I'm gonna give it a shot this weekend. I'll start with just one frag and see how it goes. Wish me luck!

You'll do fine. Just take your time and stay calm. Zoanthids are tougher than they look. Let us know how it turns out.
