compatibility with african cichlids and other fish

Post by rodcatch22 »

I've got a 75g aquarium, home to about 18 african cichlids, a crayfish, and some snails. My cichlid mix includes demasoni, acei, and labs. The tank's running at 82 degrees with a pH of 8-8.2. I added some salt as a buffer, so it's slightly brackish. I'm looking to introduce some new, less common fish to the tank. I've already considered the usual suspects like catfish, but I'm curious about some of the more unique options. I've been thinking about eels, figure 8 pufferfish, fiddler crabs, bichirs, and shrimp - do any of these sound like a good fit?

I'd advise against adding those fish to your tank with the mbuna cichlids. Mbuna can be quite aggressive. If you want a mixed tank, peacocks and haps are a better choice. They're generally more laid-back than mbuna.

You should avoid using salt in your tank, as these fish aren't brackish. Instead, consider a proper buffering method - a Malawi/Rift valley mineflake mix would be a better choice.
