Raising plate coral babies: next steps
Re: Raising plate coral babies: next steps
I did occasionally target feed them, mainly with finely chopped up mysis, but to be honest, they seemed to thrive just as well without it.

I've always been curious about the biology behind this phenomenon. Are these tiny corals growing asexually from leftover tissue, or is this some form of sexual reproduction? I mean, are they somehow derived from gametes? It's possible that certain Fungia species are already fertilized when they're collected, and these juveniles can reappear on the parent's skeleton - it sounds far-fetched, but who knows?
I've seen plate corals decline at my LFS before, and I might take a chance on one if the price is right. It'd be awesome to replicate this experience in my own tank. This is truly one of those exceptional reef-keeping experiences that makes all the hard work worth it - thanks for sharing, OP!
