identifying the sex of my new peacocks

Post by squeezed »

Picked up a bunch of Peacocks today - well, I think that's what they are, anyway. Got a few labelled as OB's, but the rest were just "Assorted Peacocks" so I'm a bit stumped. Can't remember the species of the one in pic 5 for the life of me.
Assuming they're all males due to the pointed dorsals, but I'd love it if you could ID and sex each one for me.

"Pretty sure the ones with pointed dorsals are males, and the ones with rounded fins are females, judging from the pics, seems like a safe bet."

yeah had mentioned that, just looking for confirmation really, they do all seem like males to me, except possibly the OB's

Just picked up a bunch of peacocks today - no.5 is a total mystery to me, species-wise. Got a few others that are just labelled as 'assorted peacocks' apart from the OB's. Assuming they're all males due to the pointed dorsals, but any help with ID and sex would be great.

The albino seems like a female, but those fins are kinda pointed, so maybe it's just a small male or a female, idk.

In general, males have a few distinguishing features. They tend to have longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins. Colour is also a giveaway, with males typically displaying vibrant hues and females often being silver or grey. Males also tend to grow larger, and they often have egg spots – those yellow dots on their anal fins. Females usually don't have these, although some might have the odd spot.

Looking at the pictures, I'd say the first two are males. The third and fourth look like female OBs, likely Orange Blotch or Marble Peacocks. Pictures five to eight appear to be young males, but it's not always easy to tell at this age.

Pictures nine and ten seem to be a different species altogether – possibly a Protomelas cichlid. The next four, eleven to fourteen, look like males to me. As for the last two, the albino/lutino, I think it's a male.

I'm not going to try to pinpoint the exact species, as they're still quite young.

I'll take a stab at this.

1. Sunshine cichlid - That's my best guess for this one.
2. OB or calico cichlid - The markings seem right for one of these.
3. Jacobfreiberg or fairy cichlid - Can't quite decide between the two.

The others, I'm not too confident on, but I'll keep looking.
