betta fish bloated for over three weeks

Post by jazmint »

I've been dealing with a bloated betta for over 3 weeks now. His diet consists of daphnia, frozen mysis shrimp, and frozen blood worms. I fast him once a week, but recently tried a 3-day fast - no change in the bloat. He's always got that clear stringy poop hanging from him. No pine coning of the scales, but he's really lethargic and barely moves around. Thinking of trying Kanaplex, but I'd appreciate any suggestions before medicating him. Water parameters are all good, and I do weekly partial water changes.

I came across this link that might be helpful. It talks about what to do if your fish has stringy white poop. Apparently, there are several reasons why this happens, including internal bacterial infections. This type of infection can cause a fish to stop eating, become bloated, and breathe heavily, often near the surface or a filter outlet. The link mentions that this can be fatal within 24-48 hours if left untreated. I'm not sure if this is what's going on with jazmint's betta, but it's worth taking a look.

Antibiotics should be reserved for confirmed bacterial infections. White stringy poop can be a sign of various issues - it could be a protozoan infection, an intestinal worm infection, or indeed a bacterial one. Given jazmint's betta has been dealing with bloat for three weeks, a bacterial infection seems unlikely, as they typically progress rapidly and are fatal within a short timeframe. Therefore, antibiotics like Kanaplex might not be the best course of action to try first.
