collection of jewels
collection of jewels
I just got two jewel cichlids, and they both look pregnant. Since I have slate in the tank, will the eggs still develop without fertilization? Should I introduce a male to the tank, or can I keep them alone? I'm really concerned, HELP.
Re: collection of jewels
They're not actually pregnant, just carrying eggs. The fertilization process occurs after the eggs have been laid, which means they won't be fertile without a male present. I'd advise against keeping three in the same tank, as the odd female out would likely be bullied, possibly even killed by the pair.
Adding a male and removing the female he doesn't choose might be a viable option, considering most cichlids prefer to pick their own mates. However, you'll need to monitor their behavior closely and be prepared to relocate the second female quickly to avoid any potential conflicts.

They're hiding in the rocks now. Should I get the male before they lay the eggs or after?
Re: collection of jewels
You'll need a male around to fertilize the eggs as they're being laid; after they've been laid, it's too late for fertilization to occur.
I'm not trying to be a downer or anything, but have you given any thought to what you'd do with the fry if you do manage to breed them? The market for a couple of hundred aggressive cichlids isn't exactly booming.
