Help with acan coral identification

Post by Coryd »

Can anyone confirm the IDs of these common "acan" variations for me.
I've got pics from three days ago and they're all pretty common around here.
Appreciate any help with this.

Common types around here include Mircromussa, Lordhowensis, Hillae, and Bowenbanki.
First image seems like Hillae to me.
Second one reminds me of a favia, though.
Third and fourth pics look like lords.
Fifth one's a micro.

I'd love a frag of that Hillae, by the way - awesome piece, thanks for sharing.

I'm gonna have to disagree with the Hillae ID on the first one. I think it's more likely a Bowerbanki, we've got a red morph of those in our collection and they match up pretty well. The Hillae tend to have more uniform heads, not as big and irregular as the ones in that first pic.

Having them side by side makes a huge difference, lol. Judging head size from a pic is so tough. I've had customers get frustrated with me when they ask about acans and I'm like, "Well, yeah, I do have some... but I think you might be looking for a lord." I point out the spot right next to the hillae, echinata, and bower. Lords always seem to be the first to go.

I've got another one that's got me stumped... it's not hillae, but it's close, and it's not bower... just can't put my finger on it.

You might be thinking of a rotundiflora, it's kinda in between an echinata and an oxypora chalice in terms of how it looks.

I think that's the best guess I've had so far, yeah. We're all just amateurs, really - without a microscope and a piece of skeleton, it's always just our best guess. I mean, there's probably other science-y stuff that would help too, but... Funnest guessing game I know, though.

The last four are pretty easy to identify, but the first one is still up in the air for me. There are some good guesses mentioned above, but I'm not confident in any of them just yet.
