I'm more concerned about their long-term safety, even though I'm aware that calvus grow at a glacial pace.

Considering an alternative free swimmer, Callochromis or Xenotilapia might be a good fit - just a pair would work well. I've personally never had issues with julie pair bonds, perhaps I've just been fortunate.

I'm quite fond of those callochromis, actually. Are they typically kept solo or in groups? I've been having some second thoughts about the julies - I do love them, but I've been worrying a bit too much about their pair bonds breaking. I've heard from a few people that their julie pairs split after a tank move or rescape, and that's been playing on my mind, even though I know it might not be a guaranteed outcome.

They're naturally a social bunch, but like other shoaling cichlids, they seem to adapt well to being alone.

I've been reading up on callochromis and it seems they're sand-dwellers, which has me a bit concerned about the escargot shells covering my sand - I added 70 of them for the multis, but I'm starting to think it might've been overkill.

From what I've gathered, they seem to thrive in a setup with one male and multiple females - I've been looking into callochromis pleurospilus specifically. I was wondering, do they tend to claim a specific area of the tank as their own, or would they be more inclined to bother the multifasciatus, or are they similar to julis and brichardis in that they're more rock-dweller oriented?
