my 420-liter and 110-gallon aquarium

Post by hutmog »

Just set up my Mixed Cichlid tank after a recent rescape.
I'm not a purist when it comes to mixing lakes - I know they have different water preferences, but all my fish are locally bred in Western Australia, so they're all used to the same water conditions. No wild catches here.
My fish are thriving, zero aggression, so I'm pretty happy with how things are going.
If you've got any suggestions or comments, I'm all ears.

If you're keen to check out the full journal, it's here: http/www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/406 ... -re-scape/

Lovely setup you've got there, hutmog. Mixing the lakes can be a challenge, but it sounds like you've done a great job. The fact that all your fish are locally bred and happy is a big plus. I'd love to take a look at your journal, thanks for sharing the link.

That fish in the middle with the blue face is really eye-catching. Is it the only one of its kind in the tank?

I'm guessing they're all Cichlids, but what about the others - are they all Cichlids with some Clown Loaches mixed in?

I've been told that middle fish with the blue face is a Kandango, but I'm still unsure. I'd love it if someone could confirm the ID for me. This guy was rescued from a pretty rough fish shop, and since being in my tank for six months, he's really started to show off his colours.

As for the tank, yeah, it's all Cichlids and Clown Loaches. I'm trying to build up my Loach school, but unfortunately, all I seem to find are pretty sickly looking ones at the moment.

Thanks, he does look quite unique and I'm glad I could give him a better life, he's definitely rewarding me with some amazing colours now. A close-up picture is a great idea, I'll try to get one up soon.

I actually didn't know about the Google images trick, thanks for sharing that, it's really helpful. I'll definitely give it a go and see if I can find a match for my little guy. I'll make sure to share the URL if I find a good match.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts once I get the picture up.

I did a quick search just now and the images I found don't quite match my guy - his red colouring actually extends to his fins, not just his body. I've always thought he might be a peacock of some sort, personally. Found an old pic of him from before he coloured up so beautifully.

Looks like a cichlid-shaped, inverted colour rummynose tetra to me. Tek oot.

I think you might be on to something there, mate. He does bear a resemblance to a rummynose tetra, but with that cichlid shape. The colours are pretty much inverted, too. Tek oot indeed, I'm loving the observation.

I had a look at the German Red Peacock, and I gotta say, his colouring is pretty close. The red on his fins matches my guy's, but I'm still not entirely convinced. I'd love to hear more opinions on this.

That's my boy. He's a real stunner. I'd love to find some more like him, they'd make a great addition to the tank.
