keeping a jewel cichlid

Post by dylanox »

hi, my jewel cichlid's around 4 inches and he's developed 2 spots, one at the joint between his body and tail, another in the middle of his body. I think he looks like Hemichromis bimaculatus but could he be something else?

Appears to be a typical Red Jewel. Many Jewels develop those spots as they mature. It's pretty standard, in my experience.

I'm still curious about the actual species though, anyone have any ideas?

Considering the vibrant red hue, I'm inclined to think it's likely a Red Forest Jewel Cichlid, although Hemichromis lifalili is also a possibility.
