Miami hurricane chalice coral

Post by zenoxa »

I'm looking for some advice on this coral - I picked up a small frag, about quarter-sized, from a local swap meet last week and it's currently on the bottom of my 20-gallon tank. There are about five orange eyes, but the color seems a bit dull overall. I'm used to seeing those vibrant turquoise and orange hues in pictures, so I'm wondering if it's getting too much light. The tank specs are in my signature, by the way. I've got a spot under a ledge that's partially shaded - do you think it might thrive better there? There's also less flow in that area.

I've had challice in a 20 gallon high tank under a 4 bulb T5, and that was more than enough light. Your setup seems even brighter. I think you're on the right track by considering the shaded area under the ledge - less light and reduced flow might be just what it needs.

Thanks for the advice, I went ahead and moved it under that ledge yesterday. Hopefully it'll start to regain its color, I'm really looking forward to seeing that vibrant turquoise and orange again.

The depth of your tank is definitely a factor, in my opinion it's getting too much light. I've got my own setup with the LED lights about 20 inches above the water, and I've got them running at around 50% power, seems to work out pretty well.
