I'd advise against it, if I'm being honest. @boomer makes a valid point - there are plenty of nutrient-rich foods out there that are specifically formulated for bettas. What's his current diet looking like?

Boiled egg yolk, without the white, is actually an ingredient in many commercial liquid fry foods. It's often used as an emergency food for newly hatched fry and is suitable for tiny ones like Labyrinth fry.

A small amount of boiled egg yolk can be a fine addition to your fish's diet, rich in protein and all that. Feeding it once or twice a week, on top of their regular food, won't harm them at all. I mean, fish naturally eat fish eggs in the wild, and boiled egg yolk has a similar nutritional value to those.

The only real concern is that uneaten egg yolk can cloud the water and cause ammonia or nitrite spikes. But if you only offer a little at a time and remove any uneaten food, it's perfectly fine to feed your fish. In fact, many animals, including birds, can benefit from boiled egg yolk as an occasional treat.

Variety is key, though. All fish should have a mix of foods, including frozen or live options whenever possible, on top of their regular dry flake or pellet foods. It's really about providing them with a balanced diet and keeping things interesting.

I've found boiled egg to be a great food source for newborn fry in the first few days, it's just as effective as Liquifry. When it comes to feeding adult fish, I prepare boiled egg by mashing it up with a fork. To dry it out, I leave it in direct sunlight for about 4 hours or on my kitchen worktop for 24 hours - this makes it crusty and easier to feed to my fish. The dried egg holds together well and isn't as messy as the fresh stuff. I always make sure to remove any uneaten food, and if I have leftover boiled egg, I leave it on a plate in a dry place where air can circulate - it'll last for 3 or 4 days.

Thanks for all your input, I really appreciate it. I decided to hold off on the egg for now, but I'm glad I know how to do it properly if I decide to give it a try in the future.

What about other home treats, like fruits or veggies - are there any you've had success with?

I tried searching online, but all I found were results about betta fry, so I'm hoping our experienced betta keepers here can offer some advice.

Is it safe to give Hank a small amount of boiled egg, maybe once a month?
My little guy was a total veggie fan, he'd go crazy for zucchini, cucumbers and broccoli, and de-shelled peas were like the ultimate treat, even over fish flakes.
