Identifying a mysterious issue with my frogspawn coral
Identifying a mysterious issue with my frogspawn coral
I just turned off the lights and caught this on one of my Frogspawn heads. I've had this colony for 4 years now...any ideas what's going on? Is that a brown slime buildup? Honestly, if it is, I'm at my wit's end. After all the struggles I've faced keeping this tank running, I just can't take the thought of dealing with this too.
Re: Identifying a mysterious issue with my frogspawn coral
The middle head is what I'm focusing on, and I don't see a Brown Jellyfish. That being said, the whole thing does look like it's under some kind of stress. You're going to need to run some water tests to figure out what's going on.
Re: Identifying a mysterious issue with my frogspawn coral
It's looking good this morning, opened up perfect. I'm pretty sure my clown pair's the issue - they've been hosting in it for years, and I think they're just too rough on it. Appreciate the response.

You're clearly at your wit's end with this tank. I think it's time to consider separating that coral from your clowns - they've been hosting in it for a while, and it's probably taking a toll. Getting a big BTA could be a good distraction for them, and give your Frogspawn some peace.
Re: Identifying a mysterious issue with my frogspawn coral
I'm definitely frustrated, been through a lot with this tank. Had some major coral losses due to my own mistakes with housekeeping and lighting, but I've finally got things back under control. The tank's been stable for about two months now, so that's a plus.
As for the BTA, I'm still hesitant. I've been keeping salt for about 5-6 years, but I've never taken the plunge on a BTA. Don't want to risk killing everything if it doesn't make it. Maybe someday I'll feel more confident, but for now I'm just playing it safe. Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Identifying a mysterious issue with my frogspawn coral
Honestly, I've never been a fan of clowns in a reef tank. They seem to find a way to bother coral, even when they're hosted by a nem. Seeing those little euphyllia tips floating around is just frustrating.
Re: Identifying a mysterious issue with my frogspawn coral
My clowns seem to enjoy the gsp, and they also have a thing for my galaxia, which is pretty interesting.
Re: Identifying a mysterious issue with my frogspawn coral
I'm glad your clown gets along with your corals, but my experience is the opposite.
