raising young peacocks

Post by dizzy »

Looks like I'm doing something right, huh. Seeing fry is pretty cool. I've got a 100gal tank that just sorta became an African cichlids tank - 3 peacocks, 2 red zebras, 1 yellow lab, and a hap. It's not like I set it up specifically for them or anything, but the fish seem happy enough. Happy enough to breed, that is. Guess the real question is, how many'll make it to a size where they're not lunch. Even if most don't, I'm okay with that - I'm not breeding to sell or anything. Will try to get some pics up soon.

Cheers all...Danc

It really comes down to how well the rest of the tank's inhabitants are being fed. If the adults in the tank are getting all they can eat and there's ample space for everyone, I reckon some of the little ones might just make it to a decent size. On the other hand, if the other fish are going hungry and space is at a premium, I'm afraid those fry won't stand a chance - they'll probably end up as someone else's lunch.

I've got a bit of a surprise on my hands - my Peacock and Red Zebra decided to breed back in June, and I've ended up with a bunch of survivors. I've got around 20 of them now, and they've grown big enough to start venturing out and mixing with the adults. It's pretty cool to just sit back with a cup of coffee and watch them swim around the rocks and crevices. Maybe I'll have to set up another tank specifically for Mbunas and see how that goes.
