Observations of kribensis mating behavior
Re: Observations of kribensis mating behavior
Good point about the fins. Some females can indeed have longer fins, I've come across that before.

Thanks for all the info, it was super helpful. I'm really sorry for the late response, I just got back from a summer job with basically no internet.
Lionestly, thank you so much - I'm trying to learn how to sex different fish since my LFS never seems to know anymore. I'd really love to get something to breed in my tank.
@lintel, your fish are gorgeous. I'm not looking to add any new fish at the moment, but could you tell me a bit more about them? How much are you asking?

Re: Observations of kribensis mating behavior
To add my two cents on Kribs, I recently got a pair and I'm really excited. I mentioned to the guy at my local store that I was in the mood for another breeding project, and he suggested Kribs. I bought a pair a few days later and added some pot caves. However, the male was super aggressive and the female didn't last long.
I figured he just didn't like her, so I got two more females, this time a bit larger. At first, they just hid in the plants and I barely saw them. But then, two days ago, I came home from work and the females had developed these gorgeous, cherry-red bellies. All three of them were chasing each other like crazy.
Last night, I noticed the females quivering really quickly in these short spasms. One of them had chosen one of the pot caves and excavated most of the sand, dumping it out the front. I removed the other female, so now it's just the male and the chosen female in the tank. Fingers crossed, I'm hoping they'll breed in the next few days.

Kribs aren't that hard to breed. I put a pair in a 26-gallon tank, added some caves, and they spawned in about a week. They made good parents for a couple of weeks, then they got the urge to breed again and the female started chasing the babies, so I removed the parents and let the babies grow.
The male's on the right, female's on the left.
