I recently stopped by an LFS in Ohio and the owner was kind enough to give me a tour of the hatchery where he raises his fish. It was a fantastic tour, and I saw some real showstoppers along the way - these two fish in particular caught my eye:
I was wondering if anyone could help me identify them?
By the way, the store was Something Fishy in Cleveland, Ohio - the service is top-notch and I always look forward to visiting whenever I can. Even though I only get to go once a year, I try to make the most of it each time.
Can anyone identify this lake malawi cichlid?
Re: Can anyone identify this lake malawi cichlid?
I'm pretty sure I can help you with the ID of those two stunners. They look like they're in great condition. The one on the left could be a species of cichlid, but I'm not entirely sure about the one on the right.
By the way, I've also visited Something Fishy in Cleveland, Ohio, and I completely agree with you on the great service. The owner seems really knowledgeable about his fish.

I think the bottom one might be a sunshine peacock cross, possibly with a yellow lab. Not entirely sure about the top one though.

I came across this website, http/myemail.constantcontact.com/HUGE--and-the--H--is-silent-.html?soid=1104155438978&aid=iM7SKGuC0Vg, and the second fish looks a bit like the one they're calling a german red, seems a bit off to me though. Their top fins have that distinct line across the top, maybe it's just different strains or cross breeding with another species.

I've had seveflake German reds before, and I've never seen one that looks like that, at least not a pure breed one.
Re: Can anyone identify this lake malawi cichlid?
If you google german red cichlid and browse through the images, you'll come across some that resemble the ones in question, though it's clear they're not purebred.

Top one's a dead ringer for a Super Red Empress. The other, sunshine peacock. That's the most stunning Red Empress I've laid eyes on.
