A beginner's guide to saltwater

Post by FusionRise »

When setting up a saltwater aquarium, I was wondering if I can cycle it the same way as I would with an additional freshwater aquarium.

I'm thinking of using media from a cycled tank to speed up the process. Can I do this with a saltwater tank and how would I go about it - what's the best point to do this, after I've mixed the saltwater and set up the tank, for example?

yeah, that's correct, as long as the media, rock, or sand is from another established saltwater tank, you're good to go.

I'd fill the tank about 3/4 with saltwater, making sure it's at the right temp and specific gravity first. Then I'd add the rock and new sand - I wouldn't transfer sand from an existing tank, maybe just a small amount, like a cup. When moving the rock, keep it wet and minimize the time it's out of water.
