Attaching frogspawn coral to live rock

Post by fisher1 »

I've got a frogspawn I'm trying to attach to my live rock underwater. I've tried that epoxy putty stuff, but it didn't hold up too well. Thinking of using a thick super glue instead - anyone had any luck with this? The live rock I'm looking to attach it to is just to the right of the frogspawn.

I'd suggest trying a combo of the epoxy and super glue gel, see how that works out for you. One thing I've found with that epoxy is that it's better to let it sit for a few minutes after you mix it, till it starts to firm up a bit. This way, it tends to hold more weight, whereas if you use it right away when it's still soft, it can be a bit tricky.

I've had good luck with just super glue, personally. I apply it in three layers and it's always worked out well for me.

That's my technique too. I apply a small amount of glue, let it sit for about 15 seconds to get tacky, then carefully place it where I want it. I hold it in place for another 15 seconds or so, allowing the glue to start curing and hardening slightly. It's worked well for me so far.

I've had good experiences with the 2 part epoxy putty, it's just what I prefer to use. The putty can be a bit of an eyesore for a while, but that's pretty tank-dependent - eventually, algae and coralline will cover it up.

I like to mix it up, let it cure in my hand for a bit, then place it on the rock and add the coral, molding it a bit to fit. Holding it in place for 20 seconds or so seems to do the trick. And if you ever need to move or remove the coral, the putty comes off easily.
