How many dried almond leaves is considered excessive?

Post by bettaMagenta »

Just picked up some almond leaves and I'm looking for some input. I started with 2 per tank in my softer water tanks - 45 and 55 gallons. Figured that'd be a decent starting point... what's your take on it?

You can add as many almond leaves as you want, just be mindful of the pH and make sure they don't start turning black - that's a sign they're anaerobic and could harm your fish.

Two leaves in a 45-gallon tank is a good start, but it won't make a huge difference. If you want to get the most out of the leaves and add some tannins to the water, try this: put a bunch of leaves in a container with some dechlorinated water and add an airstone. Let it sit until the water starts to turn brown, then remove the leaves. Before adding this water to your aquarium, just double-check the pH and ammonia levels.

If you have the space, consider planting some deciduous trees like European Oak - their leaves can be a great alternative to almond leaves when they fall in autumn.
