I've got a 3ft Kribensis tank and I'm looking to spice things up a bit. I've currently got 2 species of kribensis in there - Nigerkento4 Red's and Ocellated's.
I was thinking of adding a decent-sized school of Threadfin Rainbows, but I'm not sure if they'd be compatible with my kribs if they decide to breed. Would they be okay, or would I be asking for trouble?
If not, are there any other fish that you guys think would work well in my tank?
other ideas to consider
Re: other ideas to consider
A chunky school of fish could definitely liven up your tank. I've personally kept tigers with my kribs and it's worked out well, but you've got to consider the risk of the eggs and fry being eaten - most fish find them quite tasty.
Penguin tetras might be an option, they're not as common in tanks as some other species, but I think a type of barb might be a better fit, to be honest.

I'm still leaning towards rainbows, specifically Threadfins, if I'm being honest. I'm not too fussed about a few eggs or fry getting eaten, that's actually part of the reason I want to add something else to the tank in the first place. I just need to find something that can handle the kribs when they're in protective mode, which is why barbs aren't really my top choice.zenora wrote: ↑Thu Mar 06, 2025 9:18 pm A chunky school of fish could definitely liven up your tank. I'm worried that smaller fish could get picked off by the kribs in a 3ft tank, especially with two potential breeding pairs. You'd probably be left with a small area in the middle where the other fish could swim without being harassed.
Top-dwellers are a good option, but there's limited choice. The rainbows would likely stay high up, but no guarantees - that's the issue.

Re: other ideas to consider
How about a mix of Leopard and Zebra danios - not the tiny ones, I'd get them around 1-2 inches long, so they're a decent size. The females are pretty easy to spot, nice and plump.
Re: other ideas to consider
I think that's a pretty good idea
Re: other ideas to consider
Yeah, that sounds alright. For a 3ft tank, I'd say 10's a better number, 6 can be a bit thin on the ground, you know? The difference in behaviour between the two is pretty noticeable, so I'd go with 10.
Re: other ideas to consider
I think 12 is a good number too, I've always found that 6 just doesn't cut it, it's not really a school to me.
Re: other ideas to consider
The danios are a great deal near me, 4 for £5, so I can stock up easily. Thanks for backing me up on the 10 being better than 6, I've always thought 6 just doesn't look like a proper school.

Looks like we're on the same page. Do you have any pictures of your Ocellated kribs? Were they from Peter Clarke, or was that just the Nigerkento4s?
