Comparing kryptonite, candy cane, and branching vs ball mass corals

My 3 headed frag is shaping up to be a ball type colony. I'm still curious, what causes some colonies to form into balls while others branch out? I had my heart set on mine branching, but it seems that's not the case.

I came across this info on coral colonies that might be helpful. Apparently, as they mature, they tend to form a ball shape. You can check it out here: http://coral.aims.gov.au/info/factsheets.jsp. That being said, it's still possible to encourage a branching shape with regular pruning, similar to how you'd train a bonsai tree.
