My ram died

My ram cichlid passed away today. I noticed last night it was hanging out at the surface a lot, opening and closing its mouth repeatedly. Apart from that, everything seemed fine. Can someone please help me figure out what went wrong?

I'm pretty sure it was either too much ammonia or not enough oxygen that did it. What type of ram did you have? I've found German blue rams to be particularly finicky. You should do a big water change ASAP. How's the surface agitation in your tank - is it decent? Also, what's your temperature at? And are any of your other fish showing similar symptoms?

My bristlenose is also coming up for air now and I'm having some issues with the diffuser, it's not working right, could that be contributing to the problem? And yeah, it was a german blue ram.
