Torch coral care and troubleshooting

Post by RavenWolf9 »

I just got a new-to-me LED light, 165 watts with 2 watts per LED, 55 LEDs total. Still having issues with it, no matter the placement. Been a couple months now, and I'm stumped. Currently, it's 20 inches off the sand bed, same spot my friends had it. Originally, the corals were under the stock PC biocube lights. Would really appreciate some help figuring this out.

What's the intensity setting on those LEDs? Assuming they're the Chinese ones, right? Transitioning corals from PC to LEDs usually needs a few weeks of slow acclimation. Also, how high above the waterline do you have 'em?

I've got them running at 100% - they're non-dimmable. I did a slow rollout when I first added the light, just a couple hours a day, then gradually increased the time over a couple months. Figured that'd be gentler on the tank. Luckily, nothing's bleached. The lights are about 8 or 9 inches off the water and 20 inches from the sand bed.

Not my area of expertise, but I've found in my own experiences with MH, anything above 10000k tends to promote extension, especially near the top. That being said, water chemistry also plays a significant role - my experience is that it thrives in an environment with an alk of 8.3, cal of 420, and 1300 mg. It's also worth noting that these can be quite particular about placement, and being downcurrent from a softie can cause issues.
