Dipping algae from coral frags

Post by starfish9 »

If you're dipping frags of LPS and SPS, like chalices, acros, and birdsnest, what's your go-to dip and how long do you leave them in?

I've got a few different products I'm considering for dipping corals with hair algae before they go into quarantine. I want to make sure I'm using the right thing to avoid stressing them out even more.

I've got the following options:
- Brightwell Aquatics Medicoral Coral Dip
- Brightwell Aquatics Lugol's Marine
- Coral RX Dont Risk It Dip It Coral Dip
- Kent Lugol's Solution
- Two Little Fishies Revive Coral Cleaner

Can you guys give me your thoughts on these? What's worked best for you when dealing with hair algae on corals?

For LPS and SPS with hair algae, I've found TLF Revive to be my top choice - but only for LPS. I stick to Bayer for SPS. When using Revive, I follow the instructions and keep the dip time under 7 minutes.

felinxo, you think Revive would help kill algae on the plug?

Honestly, hydrogen peroxide is the way to go for algae removal. Remove as much as you can manually first, then mix 1 part peroxide with 4 parts tank water. Let it sit for around 5 minutes, should help kill off the algae.

I've also had great results with 3% Hydrogen peroxide, 1:4 ratio works well, 5 minutes is a good timeframe.

I've had good success with hydrogen peroxide dips on LPS, but can you safely use it on SPS corals as well?

Yeah, you can do SPS with H2O2 dip, 3% solution, 1:4 ratio, 5 minutes.
