Alveopora and excessive water flow
Alveopora and excessive water flow
Just got this Alveopora a few days ago, it's been open non-stop and catching the current, wondering if these blue bands are a sign of tissue damage from too much flow?
Re: Alveopora and excessive water flow
It's definitely a possibility, that's my take on it. The blue bands do seem to indicate some tissue damage, and it's likely due to excessive flow. I'd recommend moving it to a lower flow area, see how it adapts.
Re: Alveopora and excessive water flow
Mine's positioned higher in the tank with less intense lighting and significantly reduced flow. I've noticed it does well with intermittent medium flow. The polyps barely move, which seems to be what they prefer. Here's a picture of it in the current, for comparison.
Re: Alveopora and excessive water flow
Thinking of swapping this with my frogspawn - it's probably not getting enough flow.
Re: Alveopora and excessive water flow
Just got back from lunch and it's already looking better - those blue bands are completely gone, no signs of them anymore.
Re: Alveopora and excessive water flow
I still think switching with the Frogspawn would be a good idea. The Frogspawn does need a bit more light, though, and it's not too fond of the sand bed. Either way, I wish you the best of luck with this Alveopora - they're really cool corals, but also very sensitive.
Re: Alveopora and excessive water flow
Noticed the blue rings only show up when it's not fully extended, kinda like it tucks the extra in. When the lights are all the way up, it's out and looking happy. Still thinking about swapping with the Frogspawn to see if it perks up with more flow though.talonix wrote: ↑Wed Feb 19, 2025 4:57 pm Mine's positioned higher in the tank with less intense lighting and significantly reduced flow. Re: Alveopora and excessive water flow
I've had limited success with euphyllia in high flow environments - some folks seem to make it work, though. Those blue rings appear when the coral retracts, bunching up the tissue. It's possible the flow is causing this, especially since it's happening on the side where the flow is coming from. However, if it opens fully mid-day, I wouldn't be too concerned. I'm a huge fan of this coral, it's like a hardier cousin of the goniopora.
