my peacock has stopped eating and developed a lump under its chin

Post by heroldo »

I'm stumped with this one, she's tiny, but I'd swear she's swollen like she's carrying eggs if I didn't know better. She's gone over a week without eating, yet she looks fine otherwise. As soon as I put food in the tank, she darts out and rushes right up to it, but then doesn't touch it. She seems to be hovering around the same spot, but she's still swimming around okay. I've got another one that's doing the same thing, same behavior, same appearance.

What kind of food are you offering her, and how long has she been getting that same stuff?

I think she's probably holding eggs too, from what you've described.

I've been feeding her a mix of small cichlid pellets, blood worms, and brine shrimp. She also gets cichlid flakes.

Has she completely turned her nose up at all of it, or is she just being picky about certain foods? You've tried all of them with her, right? If so, I'm pretty sure she's got eggs.

She's got no interest in eating, but boy does she get excited when food drops. Rushes right up, then just stops short. Won't touch any of it. It's been almost two weeks now and I'm surprised she's still looking so healthy. She's got her favorite spot, but she's not stuck to it - she'll wander off, even chase the other fish around. No other symptoms to speak of.

I'm pretty sure she's carrying eggs or has fry in there, that bump is a giveaway. If you've got a breeding setup, you could consider stripping her, but only if she starts losing weight or if you're interested in raising the fry.
