Fin rot in aquarium fish

Post by florapix »

I'm taking care of my friend's betta for a month while she's away visiting family. I'm pretty sure the tank is a 5-gallon with a filter and heater, but I don't have all the details on parameters. The betta's not doing great, apparently - shredded fins and all. I'm thinking fin rot, and I know she tried to treat it, but I'm not sure how. I'm planning on picking up some salt from Petco to help him out. Does anyone know if this salt would work for treating fin rot - https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostor ... arium-salt? I'm not sure what kind or how much to use, so any advice would be great.

Any brand of aquarium salt should work just fine. For a 5-gallon tank, a heaped tablespoon of aquarium, rock, or filter pool salt would be a good starting point.

Fin rot is often a sign of poor water quality, so getting a handle on those parameters is key. In addition to salt treatment, 75% daily water changes can also help to clear up the issue.

On a personal note, I think you'd make a great permanent home for this betta, but that's just my two cents.

I'm pretty sure my friend got the betta when he already had fin rot, and she's been trying to help him recover with those big water changes, but it's been tough for her to get rid of it completely. I figure I can give it a shot for the month I've got him. Thanks for the advice on the salt, I'm actually going to pick it up today.
