Did some digging and found an old thread from 2008, figured I'd ask again since I'm upgrading my tank.
What are your water parameters for zoas - looking for input from experienced folks.
I've got a 75g that's been around for a while, upgrading to a 105g and want to keep some of the easier corals like zoas, anemones, and maybe a frog spawn.
Read that for nems, pH is key - 8.2-8.2 is what I've seen, but didn't find much else on the other parameters.
For zoas, I've got Calc-450, Alk-3.5m, Mag-1350, and pH-8.2 - are these on the right track?
Are these parameters compatible with the corals I mentioned, or is there a reason I shouldn't keep them together?
Optimal water parameters for coral health
Re: Optimal water parameters for coral health
The parameters for growing coral in general are pretty similar across the board. Stability is key for success, and zoas are a bit more forgiving than most LPS and SPS corals.
The only potential conflict I see with the corals you've listed is the anemone - it'll likely move around, and if your zoa happens to be underneath it when it travels, that zoa is probably done for.

Re: Optimal water parameters for coral health
I'm running Alkalinity around 8, Calcium's at 440, and Magnesium's 1320. Phosphates I'm still figuring out, but Nitrates are usually between 0-10. pH's a bit broader, 7.8-8.3, but it seems to work. I've had pretty good luck with these parameters, can keep a wide range of corals without too much trouble.
Re: Optimal water parameters for coral health
Thanks for the info. I see your Alk is way off from what I found in that old thread, I was thinking around 3.5, but 8 is a big difference.
Re: Optimal water parameters for coral health
I keep my tank around 8.5 dkh for Alk, 420 for Calc, and 1380 for Mag. Nitrates are low, phosphates are undetectable on my salifert test kit.
Re: Optimal water parameters for coral health
It seems there's some confusion about the units being used for Alkalinity. You're likely mixing up Milliequivalents per Liter (meq/L), degrees of carbonate hardness (dKH or KH), and parts per millions of calcium carbonate equivalents (ppm).Eclips wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2025 11:40 pm Did some digging and found an old thread from 2008, figured I'd ask again since I'm upgrading my tank.

For instance, the recommended values are around 2.5-4 meq/L, or 7-11 dKH, or 125-200 ppm CaCO3 equivalents - not as high as some of you mentioned. I'd suggest checking out this article for more info: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2002/2/chemistry.
