Kribensis spawning has begun

Post by rivora »

I've recently set up my kribensis in my main 323litre tank and they immediately got to work, cleaning their site and showing spawning behaviour. Moved them to the 100litre tank for some peace, but they started fighting and nothing happened for a couple weeks. Now they're back in the large tank with a piece of pvc pipe and a rock to block my sailfin pleco. They're showing spawning behaviour again, so fingers crossed for some baby kribs soon.

I'm looking for advice on separating the fry once they're free swimming. I want to keep losses to a minimum, as I'm planning to sell them to fund my next tank. Don't want to stress the parents out either. Should I use my gravel vac to suck them out once they're free swimming?

Assuming you've got a grow-on tank all set, netting them is the way to go.
Who's on your list to sell the little ones to, then?

I've got the 100litre tank up and running, that'll be the grow-on tank for the fry. Bargain price each or maybe a bulk sale, we'll see how it goes.

Wish I'd separated mine sooner, now I'm left with just three.
When you do separate them, keep a close eye on the parents to make sure mum isn't still mouthbrooding, that's a crucial step to avoid any losses.

Yeah, I lost a bunch, wish I'd separated mine sooner, only 3 left now.

You'll need to keep an eye on them before separating, make sure mum's not still feeding them.

The kribs ate them, I had to remove all the other fish, just the 2 kribs, the fry, a cory and a pleco left, and they still ate them. I was gutted, nearly cried.

They're still young, first batch of fry, I'm sure they'll learn from it. Checked again recently, only 1 left now, bless it, it's grown so much. Mum or dad will probably eat it tomorrow, but they'll be ready to spawn again, so I'm not too concerned just yet.

Had 30+ fry to start with, so that was a bit of a loss. Don't be surprised if you find eggs and then they're gone before hatching, just means mum and dad are still getting the hang of this parenthood thing, but they'll get it eventually.

I think I'll just let them be for a bit, don't wanna freak them out and end up losing the fry.
Your profile pic is awesome, got a bigger version I could take a look at?

That pic isn't mine, I found it online.

This is actually one of my own little kribs that didn't make it, sorry for the rubbish photo quality.

Just a quick update, my kribs have laid about 100 eggs, fingers crossed this time they'll make it past the parents.

Huge congrats on the eggs, now the waiting game begins. 3-5 days and they'll hatch, then another few days and they'll be free swimming. Would love to see a pic of the eggs or the parents, if you can manage to get one.
