Chalice coral with no mouth opening

Post by neonwing »

I picked up a mystery coral from the $5 frag tank at my LFS - it was a brown, half-dead thing, but I figured, why not, right? It's colored up some, got a pinkish hue going on, and I'm seeing growth, but here's the thing - it's missing some key features. I mean, I see some stuff that kinda looks like a mouth in the pics, but trust me, it's not. What it does have is this tiny opening at the top, and out of that comes this filter feeder that looks like a tiny feather duster, extending these cone-shaped "feathers".

So my question is, will this thing develop a mouth over time, or am I just stuck with this weird, eye-less coral? Still trying to get a pic up, but the upload keeps failing, will keep trying.

From the pic, it's a bit tough to make out, but I think I can see some eyes - they're just not super defined yet.

I'm thinking maybe it's just not developed yet, or maybe it's one of those weird cases where the eyes are super recessed. Either way, I'm stoked it's coloring up and showing growth - that's a win for the rescue chalice. I did notice that little opening on top, and it's got that tiny feather duster thingy poking out, so it's gotta be getting some nutrients somehow. Does anyone know if it's normal for these things to develop mouths later on, or am I just gonna be stuck with a mouthless chalice?

+1, agree with rider7, I see some possible eyes in the pic now too, they just aren't very defined yet.

Similar thing happened to me. Had a coral that was pretty beat up, but once it settled in, the eyes became more defined and it started eating like normal.
