well at work we've got a christmas special coming up - 40% off for one day, so i'm planning to grab some stuff for the new tank, like big skimmers and refractometers, that kind of thing. might even pick up some fish and inverts too, why not take advantage of the discount, right? a few of the bigger fish should be alright in a smaller tank as juveniles, just gotta be patient till the new year. got most of the gear sorted, just need to wait for the christmas tree to be out of the way.
so, questions time...
which of these four angels is most reef-safe:
emperor angel
regal angel
blue queen
majestic angel
also, is the comet grouper reef-safe? been eyeing him for ages and with the discount, he'd be 30 quid - can't pass that up surely.
for my nano, i'm thinking of adding a torch, sun conch, montipora and a pair of banggaiis for now - just need something in there till the new year, then everything will go into the main tank.
and don't worry, i'm not gonna go crazy and buy a load of fish, actually taking three non-reef safe ones back, so that'll free up some space for now.
A marine's future day
Re: A marine's future day
I'd say the Emperor Angel is your safest bet out of those options, but you'll definitely need an autofeeder to keep him from snacking on your coflakes.
As for groupers, I think most are reef safe in the sense that they won't bother inverts or coflakes, but they'll eat any fish that fits in their mouth, so that's something to consider. Plus, they can get huge, so you'll want to research how big your comet grouper can get and make sure your tank is big enough to accommodate it.
On your nano setup, I'm curious about the bangaiis - are they captive-bred or wild-caught? Captive-bred have a much higher survival rate, and considering the species is likely to end up on the endangered list soon, I'd advise against wild-caught ones if I'm being honest.

Re: A marine's future day
i've heard mixed things about keeping emperors and regals together, but i'm not sure if it's worth the risk, regals can be a nightmare to feed and i've heard they can get pretty reef safe once they settle in.
as for the grouper, i think you're right, some of the smaller ones don't get too big, the comet grouper or marine betta for example, they seem like they'd be okay in a decent sized tank.
i'll double check with the breeder tomorrow, but i'm pretty sure the bangaiis are tank bred, tmc have loads of young ones so fingers crossed.

Re: A marine's future day
If I had to choose, I'd go with Regal all the way. The key is getting one from the Red Sea, as they tend to be less nippy, from what I've read.
As for the Comet grouper, I've found it to be reef safe, so that's a plus. Now, regarding the angels, I've got to advise against the others you mentioned, unless you've got a massive tank - we're talking over 180 gallons. The Emperor, for instance, can grow to be a real giant, over a foot and a half in length. If you had a tank that size, I think a Regal would be a great addition, and the two would likely get along just fine.

Re: A marine's future day
tank's gonna be one of three sizes - 4foot and 100 gallons, 6 foot 112 gallons, or 4foot 130gallons. considering the regal and comet, they're £115 worth of fish but with the offer it's like 70 quid, bargain if you ask me.
not sure where the regal's from, think they've banned exports from the red sea till next year, so might not be an option.

Re: A marine's future day
Go for the six footer then, sounds like a plan.
Re: A marine's future day
Sounds good, six foot tank is the way to go, makes aquascaping easier and your floor will thank you, weight wise.zenoxa wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2025 5:43 am If I had to choose, I'd go with Regal all the way. The key is getting one from the Red Sea, as they tend to be less nippy, from what I've read.

Re: A marine's future day
ended up gettin a flame instead, 30 quid was a steal. went a bit mental with the christmas deal, got loads of new goodies.
Re: A marine's future day
hopefully he's not a nipper, got a good vibe about him though
