Are these coral heads worth fragging

Post by Falkeon »

I've got a pretty standard green Frogspawn, nothing too out of the ordinary. The lower heads are struggling, I think it's due to lack of light - the new growth is shading them out. I'm considering fragging the lower heads off to save them, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle. What would you guys do in this situation?

Just turned on the light for the pics, so it doesn't look its best - in person it's really full and puffy.

I'd try to frag the lower heads and then slowly reacclimate them to your tank's lighting.

Fragging the lower heads seems like a no-brainer to me. At worst, it's an opportunity to gain some hands-on experience and learn from the process.

When I frag mine, I'll probably just break off the whole branch with the head on it back to the main stalk. I've got some of the same issue you're dealing with, Falkeon.

Might as well make the most of it and harvest them. Frogspawn can grow pretty quickly under the right conditions, and before you know it, you might be running out of space in a year or two.

I decided to go for it and frag the lower heads. Used a dremel with a diamond blade - made the process super easy and left a nice clean cut. The almost dead frags already look way healthier, I'm pretty sure they'll grow out into new colonies in no time.
