Hey guys,
I'm thinking of adding a sand sifting goby to my tank to help keep the sand turned over, since algae can grow on it pretty quickly. With 70kg of live rock and a deep sand bed, there'll be plenty of pods and other small critters for it to eat. I'd love some suggestions on goby species or other reef-safe fish that'll sift through the sand and keep it turned over.

Re: sand-sifting goby species
Sleeper gobies are all sand sifters, but the intensity varies. Some species are more aggressive with their sifting, while others are more laid-back. Are you after a goby that's gonna turn your sand over completely, or just give it a bit of a stir?
Re: sand-sifting goby species
I'm with coral8 on this one, they're usually spot on.
Be careful though, these gobies can be sand kicking machines, sucking up a huge amount and then sifting it out right into the middle or top of your tank, turning the water into a sandstorm.
Why not think about a conch instead, Seffie x

Nemo, I'm after a decent sand sifter. Which ones do you find do it best? Seffie, not too keen on conches for me, so I think I'll stick with a fish. Plus, it'll add some life to the bottom of the tank.

From my experience with sand sifters, I've found that gold head sleepers are the most prolific sifters, but can be a bit of a nuisance at times as they often don't redeposit the sand in its original location. Diamond gobies are a close second in terms of sifting activity.

Thanks coral8, I think I'll give the diamond goby a go. Looks like a great option to me, really like the way they look. Cheers, jtg

I've got limited experience with marine, so take my thoughts for what they're worth. I had a similar issue with sand and picked up a chalk goby - the blue cheek/six spot sleeper type - and it's been a great addition. The goby does a fantastic job of turning the sand over, although, as Seffie mentioned, it doesn't always put it back where it found it. I did a lot of reading on this type of goby beforehand and all the articles said they tend to starve, but my little guy is still going strong after three months and always comes out at feeding time, racing around the tank like mad. Just thought I'd share my experience.
