What's the easiest substrate for growing grass?

Hi,

I've attempted to grow short hair grass, but so far, nothing's worked out. I used mineflake rock wool as the substrate, which I previously used for a different plant in my aquarium. I'm looking for a material to put in the bottom of a one-gallon aquarium to create a grass-like blanket effect.

Hi, was it dwarf hair grass you tried growing? I've had success with it in tropica aquarium soil, using ferts and Co2. That being said, it's definitely possible to grow it in sand with root tabs - I'd recommend adding a liquid fert as well.

For carpeting plants like this, I've found the in-vitro style pots to be a better option. You get more for your money and avoid the hassle of untangling rock wool, which can be a nightmare with delicate plants like hairgrass.

If I grow it in an active substrate like floruite or ADA amazonia, will the roots hold it together so it doesn't fall apart when I move the tank? I'm thinking if I have to carry it to the toilet for a water change, will it just break apart? Also, I was wondering, will ramshorn snails eat the seeds, does anyone know?

I'm not sure about the snails, never had them myself. Maybe consider using a siphon hose to drain the water directly into the toilet, that way you won't have to tilt the tank.

I've got a tap on the aquarium, it's an old drinks dispenser, so that's a plus. I always pour water into a bottle first, just to check for any unwanted snail stowaways - don't want a ramshorn snail takeover in the toilet or drainpipes, that's for sure.

Yeah, in that case the active substrates should work out fine, no issues with them holding together when you're doing water changes.
