Iron plays a similar role in low-tech societies as co2 does in high-tech ones.

I get the Liquinox chelated iron at Home Depot - it's in a blue container and costs $11 a gallon. Steer clear of the other brand they sell, it's a red liquid iron and way more expensive. When I added magnesium salts to treat a fungal issue, not only did it cure the fish, but it also made my Java ferns even darker. Iron is a must for serious plant growth, I'm telling you. For my 240-gallon tank, I use about two tablespoons every 2-3 days, but for most aquariums, you'd be fine with less than half an eye dropper's worth.

Appreciate the tip, I'll definitely look into it.starlord wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 6:30 pm I'm seeing crazy growth from my plants now, vibrant colors too. Alternanthera's turned a deeper red since I started dosing iron every other day. My swords are thriving, especially the Ozelot red - huge paddle leaves and all. Fish love swimming under and through them.
Don't believe the "Iron doesn't make a better planted tank" myth. In my experience, it does it all. Iron's way better than using dirt - no algae problems like you get with potting soil. Give me iron over potting soil any day.
I grab it by the gallon at Home Depot, and online you can even mix your own for cheaper. Guess the secret's out now.

Appreciate the share, I'm gonna give this a shot too.

The key to this is consistency - dosing every 2-3 days is crucial. You'll start seeing results quickly, but sticking to the schedule is what really makes the difference. It's not about the amount, just that you're committed to dosing regularly - unless you've got a doser, of course.

I'm curious to know if there's a UK equivalent for the Liquinox chelated iron I've been using. Anyone have a go-to source across the pond?

No Liquinox at Home Depot, had to order online from Zorchzon, got a gallon of B1 instead - probably need to send it back.starlord wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 6:30 pm I'm seeing crazy growth from my plants now, vibrant colors too. That's unfortunate news. I've got about half a gallon left, which is good since it lasts a long time. I did notice that one Home Depot didn't have it, but the other one did locally. The Liquinox works great and my fish are fine. I need to check out the other Home Depot to see if they still have some in stock.

I ordered the Liquinox Iron and Zinc on Zorchzon instead. I also grow azaleas and hydrangeas, so even if it's not fish tank safe, it'll still come in handy. Returned the B1 supplement and they're supposed to reship the other one. Can you take a pic of your Liquinox label, @starlord?

Iron and zinc in a blue gallon bottle - that's the stuff. Safe to use in small doses, just remember, everything in moderation.

Finally got my order sorted, fingers crossed Amazon gets it right this time.
