Is favia coral a threat to other aquarium inhabitants?

Post by Eonix99 »

Considering getting a couple Favia frags, but I've heard they have sweepers - is it worth the hassle? If the sweepers are 3" and the coral just keeps growing, what's the plan? Attach it solo, let it grow, and just let nature take its course - letting it kill off whatever it comes into contact with? Guess that's the approach.

I've had my favia for a bit now, and while it hasn't had a major growth spurt yet, they're known to be fast growers. My longest sweepers have been around 1 1/2" so far, but I'm guessing they might get longer as it matures. As your favia grows, you should be able to break off the new growth if it starts getting too close to other corals.

Got a small favia frag in my tank and I've seen it torching nearby frags at night, about 2" away. Definitely one of the longer sweepers I've observed.

My experience with Favia corals has been nothing but positive - they've been incredibly easy-going. I've found them to be very adaptable, not finicky about lighting or flow, and they've done just fine without target feeding. Placement-wise, I've had them on the sand bed and among the rocks, with no issues either way. Growth has been steady, but not exactly rapid, still, they've always managed to fill out nicely.

I think I'll take the plunge and grab a Favia frag once my new tank is up and running.
