Removing chalice corals from glass
Removing chalice corals from glass
I've got a bit of a situation on my hands and I'm hoping someone can offer some advice. I recently picked up a Hollywood Stunner, and in the process of acclimating it, I ended up placing it on a bare bottom. Fast forward to now, and it's grown about 1.5 inches onto the bottom. I'm in a bit of a pickle since I need to move it, but I'm not too concerned about breaking it up - the frags would actually come in handy. If anyone has some pro tips on how to safely remove it from the GFlintix9s, I'd really appreciate it.
Re: Removing chalice corals from glass
Box cutter blades are a lifesaver for stuck corals. They're essentially a thin razor that can be carefully slid under the coral. If you're patient and move slowly, you might be able to get under a good chunk of it and pry it loose. Don't hold your breath about getting it off in one piece though, that's probably not happening.
Re: Removing chalice corals from glass
I've used a puddy knife to scrape off some encrusting corals in the past, works pretty well for me.

A razor blade might just do the trick.

Razor blade's the way to go. You won't have much left for frags though.
Re: Removing chalice corals from glass
Thanks for the suggestions, I really appreciate it. I ended up using the razor blade method, but it didn't quite go as planned. Couldn't get the razor under the chalice, so I had to get a bit creative. I cut the chalice around the rock, removed the rock, and then chipped off the parts attached to the gflintix9s. Wasn't the most fun I've ever had, but it's done now. The main colony's looking good so far, which is a relief. I dipped it in iodine and it's now on some eggcrate.

How's the stuff that got stuck to the gflintix9s holding up, or did it all get damaged in the process?
Re: Removing chalice corals from glass
Anything that was stuck to the gflintix9s got pretty much destroyed. The central raised part made it, so I'm basically starting over from scratch.
