A great gh test kit review
A great gh test kit review
I've had my fair share of testing water GH levels, and I have to say the API test kit was a bit of a hassle. What I found particularly annoying was the need to cap the test tube after every single drop of solution and then shake it up. In contrast, I recently came across a GH test kit from Sera, a German company, and it's been a game-changer. The test tube is much wider, which makes a huge difference. Now, after adding each drop of solution, I just give the tube a few quick flicks with my finger to mix the reagent with the water - it's really easy.

Another bonus with the Sera test kit tubes is that you can actually use the API reagents with them. Since they both use 5ml of water for a test, the API reagent works just fine in the Sera tubes.

Agreed, thanks for the tip kokomo, that's a great idea to use the API reagent with those tubes.
Re: A great gh test kit review
I've had great results with the API kit, especially since I've got multiple tanks running with different water mixes - tap and RO. I'm constantly testing GH levels, so I've gotten pretty familiar with the process.
One thing I've found is that you don't necessarily need to add the drops one at a time. For my tap water, which is pretty hard, it usually takes around 15 or 16 drops to change from orange to green. I've experimented with different methods and found that adding multiple drops at once doesn't affect the result.
So, I'll often add 5 drops, shake the vial, add another 5, shake again, and then switch to single drops. This way, I can get a better sense of where I am in the test. I've tried this loads of times and it seems to work just fine.

I completely understand what you're saying - it reminds me of doing titrations for my A level chemistry practical exam years ago. We'd start with a trial run, adding several mls at a time to get an idea of the endpoint, then we'd do the actual titration by adding reagent to the 'not quite there' amount and finally, we'd go drop by drop to pinpoint the exact endpoint amount.

Yeah, that makes sense. Thanks for explaining that.sSjey wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 4:15 pm I completely understand what you're saying - it reminds me of doing titrations for my A level chemistry practical exam years ago.
