I thought chromis were pretty chill, but then I brought home two bicolour chromis and the bigger one took out the smaller one in a week flat... ended up getting six so they'd calm down, but that just led to overstocking and a huge headache trying to catch them to rehome... took me nearly two months before I finally broke down the entire tank to catch the last ones... honestly, unless you're looking for a handful, I'd steer clear of chromis.

A Scott's fairy wrasse, or any fairy wrasse for that matter, would be a fine choice for a 55g - they're generally pretty good fits for tanks of that size.

Just a heads up, I've heard anthias can get pretty large, might be too big for a 55 gallon tank.

I don't entirely agree; some species of anthias don't get much bigger than 6 inches. However, they really thrive in groups, which is something a 55-gallon tank can't accommodate. Given that, I wouldn't recommend them for a tank of this size, although keeping a single one might be doable.
