Is my floating tiger lotus bulb dead?

I accidentally snapped the bulb off my tiger lotus while trying to propagate a new one in a planted jar, and now it's just drifting around. Any chance it'll still germinate or should I just go for a fresh bulb?

I had a similar experience with a bulb that came with the top broken off - planted it over a year ago and it just vanished, I'm guessing it must've rotted away. The top never really grew much and it's had a couple of close calls, almost dying off twice but managing a slight recovery each time. I'm thinking of ordering a new one, hoping it'll arrive healthy and make the $8 worth it.
