Fragging duncan corals
Fragging duncan corals
I've got a Duncan that's branching out and I'm curious about the best time and method to frag it. What's the process - just grab a dremel and cut off a branch? Will the wound heal up okay on its own?

When it comes to fragging a branching Duncan, just cut through the branch - you're essentially cutting through the skeleton, so it doesn't leave a hole. Be careful not to cut too close to the head, as you risk hitting live tissue. If you're using a dremel, keep in mind that they can heat up the coral quickly, so work at a moderate pace. I'm not saying rush through it, but don't linger on the coral for too long either. I'd recommend checking out some YouTube videos on fragging Duncans - they're pretty straightforward, and watching a quick video can give you a better idea of what to expect.

Another option for fragging duncans is using side cutters, which can be a safer choice compared to a dremel as it eliminates the risk of overheating the coral.

I fragged mine with a dremel. Bought a single head, worked out fine. It had grown to 30 and was getting out of hand, so I had to take action. Unfortunately, it got so big that other corals were stinging it.

Cutting through live tissue is actually beneficial, as it'll encourage a new head to grow in place of the old one. The key is to avoid cutting too close to the growing end of the branch - you want to leave enough tissue on the frag to facilitate proper healing.

I really appreciate the guidance, it's definitely helped put my mind at ease about fragging my Duncan. I was feeling pretty uncertain before, but now I'm much more confident in taking the next step.

Next time, I'd cut a bit further down on the stalk, leave a bit more on the piece you're cutting off.

The angle of the pic is pretty deceptive, it actually looks way shorter than it is.
