information on the mccosker wrasse
information on the mccosker wrasse
I'm considering adding a pair of these wrasse to my 80L cube, which has a 60L sump. I've come across conflicting info on the recommended tank size and I'd love to hear from anyone with experience keeping them - would my tank be suitable for a male and female pair?
Re: information on the mccosker wrasse
nixora, Scott Michael's got some insight in the Fish of the Week thread, worth a look.

To cut to the chase, I don't think your tank's quite big enough, in my opinion.

Re: information on the mccosker wrasse
I think it's not so much the water volume that's the issue, but rather the swimming space. I've kept one in a 20g tank that's 30" long and to be honest, the length was just about sufficient - a bit more would've been even better. The way these wrasse move through the water, gliding effortlessly, really demands a longer tank.

Re: information on the mccosker wrasse
Considering rustyfox9's experience with a 30" long tank, I'm wondering if my 30" 29g would be suitable for a single one. It's definitely something I'll have to think about.rustyfox9 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 10:30 pm I think it's not so much the water volume that's the issue, but rather the swimming space. Re: information on the mccosker wrasse
What's the length of the KJ tank, out of curiosity. Mine was a 30" 20g imperial, just about managed but a bit more length would've been ideal.

So I'm wondering, would a 30" 29g be suitable for one of these wrasse, given the swimming space requirements. I'm considering it, but I'd like to know the tank length of rustyfox9's setup for comparison.rustyfox9 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 23, 2024 10:30 pm I think it's not so much the water volume that's the issue, but rather the swimming space. Re: information on the mccosker wrasse
Sorry KJ, just needed the length of your tank, volume should be alright.
EDIT - Bear with me, it's late and the morphine's playing up with my eyes and brain.
It should be fine, could've done with a bit more length but you've probably got more width or height to make up for it. Just a thought, you're planning an upgrade soon, aren't you, so might be worth trying one out.

I can see why you'd say that about morphine, I've been there too, but I'm sure it's not all fun and games. Anyway, I did put the 30" length in my previous post, and as for the other dimensions, my tank is 12" wide and 16" or 18" high - I'm not exactly sure off the top of my head.
Upgrading is definitely on the cards for me, but it's all dependent on a few factors. I'm waiting for the right opportunity to come along, and on top of that, my husband and I are considering selling our house to upgrade to a bigger one. If that happens, I'll have to put my tank upgrade plans on hold for a bit. However, I'm sure I could find a local club member who'd be happy to take my wrasse if I need to rehome it due to stress or any other issues.
