3 Discus fish left

Post by mirus »

Hi everyone, hope you're all doing well and staying safe during these tough times.
I'm reaching out because I recently had an accident with my KH buffer and sadly lost three of my beautiful fish. They were huge and had grown so well over the past three years. I hope they're enjoying their time in heaven, swimming with the shrimps.
I still have three large fish left (about 18cm), two males and one female, and they're all doing great. The males do fight occasionally, but it's not too bad. I'm planning to get more discus in 3-4 months, but I've heard it's not a good idea to mix small and large fish. The ones I want (16-18cm) are quite pricey, around 250€. I know discus need to be in groups of at least 5-6, so I'm worried about my three for the next few months. Will they be okay until then?

Re: 3 Discus fish left

In my experience, your three discus should be fine for the next few months. If aggression becomes a problem, having plenty of decorations to break the line of sight can really help to disperse it. When you do get the new fish, try to get ones that are similar in size to the ones you already have - it's just easier that way. Also, don't skip the quarantine process for the new additions, it's a hassle but it's worth it to avoid any potential issues down the line.

Good luck, and take care.

Thanks Phil for the advice, I've got plenty of driftwood and rocks in the tank so the couple can keep to one side and the other male can stay at the far end. With a 500 litre tank, it's long enough for them to have their space. They only fight when food is given and they come to the center of the tank to eat. I'll keep saving and plan to buy 3-5 more discus, about the same size as my current ones.

Hopefully they won't grow too big before I can add more, or it could get really expensive, I'm a bit worried about that.
