Do you quarantine your plants before introducing them to your collection?

Post by SeaBidder »

I'm still a bit gun-shy after those ich issues. Before adding anything new to my tank, I want to make sure it's safe. Has anyone ever QT'd plants? If so, what's the process and how long do you keep them in quarantine?

I didn't QT my plants, but from what I've read, you can leave them in a bucket for a couple weeks with some light and a few water changes.

I'll give it a shot then. Got some plants coming in and fingers crossed my ich is finally behind me. Still got 19 neons waiting in QT, they're probably losing hope by now - almost 5 weeks is a long time for them to be stuck in there.

They've got a good amount of space in there, at least.

I've been doing that with my plants too. I inspect them thoroughly, then give them a quick dip in tap water. Next, I transfer them to a clear plastic container filled with tap water, and I add a full dose of flourish. I let them soak up the sun for about a week before introducing them to my tank.

@oldraider - Indoors, I'm guessing? Do you just let them float in the container or is there something holding them in place?

@oldraider - Indoors, I presume? Do you just let them float?

When the weather permits, I move them to the back deck with a clear plastic lid to keep bugs out. I do let them float. I've got some newly acquired ferns undergoing the same process right now, and I've added a bit more flourish since I don't have to worry about fish.

I'll definitely quarantine them, it's just too much of a risk.
I'm planning to get some plants soon for a new tank setup.
First, I'll rinse them a few times in tap water, then I'll soak them in Copper Safe or Potassium Permanganate for 20-30 minutes at a high dosage. Hopefully, that won't be too harsh on the plants.
After that, I'll put them in a clear container for a couple of weeks, keeping them near a sunny spot but covered with a mesh or acrylic sheet to keep mosquitoes out.
I'll change the water regularly and probably add some liquid fertilizer to help them along.
